Heartbreaking news from Cardiff University as the community mourns the loss of a beloved staff member. Curtis, a talented young academic, tragically died following a fall at the Translational Research Hub on Friday. He was just 29.

In a heartfelt tribute, Curtis’ family described him as a “beloved son and brother” who will be deeply missed every day. Vice-Chancellor Wendy Larner expressed the university’s grief, calling his passing “tragic and devastating.” Curtis was not only a respected physicist but also a cherished colleague and friend, known for his kindness, thoughtfulness, and readiness to help others.
Professor Peter Smowton, Curtis’ line manager, reminisced about Curtis’ exceptional talent and character, saying he will be remembered as “kind and considerate” and a physicist with an extraordinary grasp of his field. Curtis was always willing to lend a hand or offer sage advice, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he worked with.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Maindy Road, but sadly, Curtis was pronounced dead there. South Wales Police have stated there are no suspicious circumstances around his death, and investigations are ongoing.
During this heart-wrenching time, Cardiff University is encouraging staff and students to reach out for support from the university’s wellbeing team. Our thoughts are with Curtis’ family, friends, and everyone affected by this tragedy. Let’s honour Curtis’ memory by supporting each other and offering a helping hand to those in need.
