Exciting transformation alert in Cardiff! The historic Howells department store is set for a dazzling makeover. Plans revealed are for an 11-storey red-brick tower at St Mary Street, ushering in modern apartments, sleek offices, chic restaurants, and even a hotel! While the 200-year-old Bethany Chapel restoration is a go, we’re still waiting on the final nod for the tower.

However, there’s some buzz in the city about this new kid on the block. Cardiff Civic Society has raised concerns about the tower overshadowing the charming, listed buildings around it, arguing it could harm the historical essence of the area. They’re calling the design ‘damaging’ and ‘insensitive.’

The developers are firm on preserving key historical elements, like the famous St Mary Street structure and other iconic buildings, even if some less significant parts might face demolition to make room for a vibrant public square and those 105 swanky new flats.
Love it or hate it, this project aims to blend Cardiff’s rich heritage with a modern twist. With over 4,000 sqm of commercial space and a 114-room hotel, it’s set to be a lively new hub in the heart of the city.
What do you think, Cardiff? An exciting leap into the future or a step too far? Let’s hear your thoughts!
