Passengers on easyJet flight U22708 from Madrid to Bristol experienced a tense twist during their journey. As the flight approached its destination, an unexpected bird strike on another aircraft led to the temporary closure of Bristol Airport’s runway. This resulted in a dramatic diversion for the easyJet flight.
Traffic Updates

With the airport suspending all runway operations, the easyJet plane had to circle in the sky, causing fuel levels to dip to critical levels. The pilot swiftly issued a Pan-Pan emergency call, which escalated to the international distress signal Squawk 7700—a rare and serious alert indicating a general emergency.

With no time to lose, the plane was rerouted and made a landing at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, a significant 180 miles away from its intended destination. After refuelling at Liverpool, the aircraft finally touched down back at Bristol around midnight, more than two hours later than planned.

This incident comes on the heels of a similar event just a week prior, when a Lufthansa flight declared an emergency shortly after take-off from Heathrow, turning back towards the airport under duress.

Safe travels to all, and kudos to the crew for keeping calm under pressure! ✈️✨
