As the mayhem unfolded, Sky Sports Racing’s Alex Hammond caught viewers up on the jaw-dropping scene. Flags were waving, trying to signal a false start, but most jockeys seemed oblivious, racing full-speed to the finish line regardless. Winning jockey Tommie Jakes claimed he never saw the flags: “I don’t know why it would have been a false start. I didn’t see any flags waving.”
In response to the chaos, stewards slammed Tommie Jakes and four others—Jack Doughty, Jack Dace, Taryn Langley, and Alec Volkhansky—with suspensions for ignoring the recall flags. Chief steward Richard Westropp explained that everything should have gone smoothly, “Procedures were followed,” he assured, but clearly, the message didn’t reach everyone.
