Charity Laments Insufficient Poverty Relief Efforts, Thousands Rally in Solidarity

Thousands have taken to the streets of Edinburgh with a powerful message: progress on tackling poverty is still far from enough. Organised by trade unions and charities, the “Scotland Demands Better” march aims to urge both Scottish and UK governments to take concrete action just before the UK Budget and the upcoming Scottish Parliament elections.

Peter Kelly from Poverty Alliance, one of the key organisers, voiced that while there have been strides in reducing child poverty in Scotland, it’s not time to celebrate just yet. He insists there’s still “so much more to do.” Mr Kelly highlighted that although child poverty rates have been dropping in Scotland, they remain above the targets set by the Child Poverty (Scotland) Act 2017.

Scotland’s First Minister sent a message of solidarity to the marchers, noting that despite Scotland’s progress, decisions made at Westminster are hindering further improvements. The UK Government, on the other hand, asserts its commitment to tackling poverty through benefit increases and an ambitious strategy set to be unveiled soon.

The march has sparked a conversation on the streets of Edinburgh and beyond about how much further we need to go to ensure no child grows up in poverty in Scotland. Whether it’s through policy changes, community support, or further investments, the sentiment is clear: more action is required, and it’s needed now.
