Imagine going to bed thinking you’ve just caught the normal winter flu, only to have it turn into something life-threatening overnight. That’s exactly what happened to Roberta Alisauskaite, a young mum from Carmarthenshire. Initially feeling just a bit under the weather, she assumed it was nothing more than a winter cold. However, what seemed like ordinary flu symptoms quickly turned into deadly sepsis.

Roberta was battling not only the flu-like symptoms but also an abscess in one of her wisdom teeth. She thought she could power through, focusing on her job as a mental health nurse and looking after her two boys, Sean, 8, and Koby, 6. But things took a turn for the worse on October 20th. After sweating it out on a school run, she went back to bed, only to fall into septic shock.

The situation took a terrifying twist when her boys returned home and found her slurring her words and unresponsive. In a brave move, her son Sean dialed 999, saving her life. Roberta woke up in Glangwili General Hospital, treated for sepsis with strong antibiotics and pain relief.

Now on the mend, Roberta is committed to raising awareness about sepsis, a condition that could easily be mistaken for common cold or flu symptoms. She talks about the importance of recognising signs like extreme shivering, slurred speech, and breathlessness and acting fast.
Roberta’s experience is a stark reminder of how quickly health can change and how critical it is to listen to your body. She wants others to know that what seems like a simple cold could be a sign of something much more dangerous. Let’s keep an eye out for each other and spread awareness—sepsis can happen to anyone, and it’s vital to catch it early.
