Exciting news for local sports lovers! Merthyr Tydfil Council is making a game-changing decision by scrapping pitch fees, helping our beloved sports clubs stay in the game. A council report has highlighted the risks of clubs facing financial trouble or even folding if fees were reintroduced. The big idea? Keep pitches free until at least April 2028, giving clubs room to thrive financially and keeping our local football league vibrant.

This move stems from a review in 2019 that laid bare the issues many clubs faced with costly pitch fees. Recognising the financial stress, the parks department decided to give clubs a break on these fees until 2026. Now, after careful consideration, they’ve decided to extend this lifeline for an extra two years.
The annual cost of maintaining these pitches will be covered by the council’s grounds maintenance budget, sparing clubs from the expense. With fewer teams and minimal impact on council finances, this decision could be a big win for everyone involved.

Cheers to Merthyr Tydfil for supporting local sports and ensuring our community clubs have a fighting chance! Let’s hope this encourages more people to take part in sports and keeps our fields buzzing with activity! ⚽🏉
