Cardiff’s City Road turned into a rubbish nightmare this Boxing Day! While some enjoyed festive swims at the beach, residents here faced a less idyllic scene with litter strewn everywhere. Overflowing bins, fly-tipped waste, and gutters filled with trash were the order of the day.

Locals like Maisie Tyler, 22, describe the daily challenges of dodging rubbish: “I’m always slipping over. It’s a nightmare with food on the ground attracting pigeons and rats. This can’t go on.” Elizabeth Burggraaf, 48, agrees: “It’s embarrassing. The top of City Road is plagued with discarded takeaway oil drums and disgusting bins. It’s a persistent problem.”

Cardiff Council says they’re making every effort to tackle this mess. A spokesperson highlighted their initiatives in Cathays and Plasnewydd, where enforcement notices and fines are issued to curb improper waste disposal. Last year, more than 2,600 enforcement notices were handed out, with 342 fines.
The festive season often complicates matters, with altered bin collection schedules to give workers a much-deserved break. Cardiff Council advises residents to check collection days and notes a pause in garden waste collections over Christmas.
The scene on Boxing Day might be behind us, but the rubbish issue remains a topic of frustration for those living and working along City Road. Let’s hope the New Year brings cleaner streets for everyone! 🌿💪 #Cardiff #CityRoad #KeepItClean
