Attention Ceredigion residents! There’s a big decision looming that could affect how you handle your household waste. The council is considering the closure of the Rhydeinon household waste site as part of a review to save £100,000. The decision is up for debate at the upcoming council meeting on September 24.

Ceredigion currently operates four waste facilities: in Kilmaenllwyd, Glanyrafon, Lampeter, and Rhydeinon. Of these, Rhydeinon and Lampeter overlap in terms of coverage, putting Rhydeinon on the chopping block. The public consultation earlier this year saw 1,250 responses, many opposing the closure due to concerns over increased travel, fuel costs, and potential fly-tipping.

Council papers suggest that shutting Rhydeinon might have the “least impact on residents,” but this hasn’t eased worries. If Rhydeinon closes, traffic is expected to increase around Kilmaenllwyd and Lampeter. The council assures that no reductions in opening hours will happen immediately, though they’ll continue monitoring usage.
Interestingly, current contracts for these sites end in early 2026, with new contracts coming up soon. This opens the door to possibly introducing reduced hours, as voiced in the consultation.
Three options lie before the council: close Rhydeinon, delay the decision until more cost assessments are done, or keep it open temporarily using grant funding. The choice has yet to be made, so stay tuned for updates! Your voice is key in shaping the future of waste management in Ceredigion. What are your thoughts on this potential closure? Share them below!
