There’s been a buzz in Cardiff’s Pontcanna neighbourhood over a controversial proposal to transform a charming Victorian house on Cathedral Road into a swanky hotel complete with a bar and restaurant. Local firm Russo & Co Ltd’s plans hit a snag after facing fierce community backlash, forcing the proposal to be pulled from consideration by Cardiff Council.

Local councillors including Caro Wild and Leonora Thomson voiced strong opposition, concerned that adding a bar and restaurant in this residential area was a recipe for chaos. Imagine the noise, late-night festivities, and traffic right by your home! One councillor noted that there are already plenty of venues nearby, making the new additions unnecessary.

Residents also chimed in, worried about how the changes could impact local businesses, especially as it was just a stone’s throw from a nursery. One passionate objection stated that this new venture could heap pressure on existing eateries and hotels already vying for customers.
Even former First Minister Mark Drakeford joined the debate. He highlighted that this part of Cathedral Road is renowned for its serene, residential vibe, in contrast to the bustling southern end, which does host a few hotels.
The original plan had painted a picture of a “luxury city break accommodation” featuring five en-suite rooms, a bar, and a restaurant. It touted benefits like natural surveillance and community ownership as deterrents against anti-social behaviour. But not everyone was convinced, with many arguing that such changes would chip away at the area’s character.
The dust has settled for now, but this won’t be the last we hear about efforts to repurpose Pontcanna’s historic buildings. Keep an eye out for what’s next in this sought-after Cardiff enclave!
