š” Big Changes Ahead for Council Tenants in the Vale of Glamorgan! š”

Attention council tenants in the Vale of Glamorgan! Expect your rents to rise by over 4% starting 2026, following a decision made on January 12th. This significant change comes as the council strives to keep up with inflation and rising costs. But it’s not just about copingāit’s about building for the future too!

Here’s the scoop: The extra revenue will be utilised to continue ambitious projects, including constructing new council homes and ensuring existing ones meet the new Welsh Housing Quality Standard (WHQS). Over Ā£70 million is needed for current upgrades, and an additional Ā£95 million for extensive decarbonisation goals by 2040.

Despite this increase, council rents remain considerably more affordable compared to private rentalsāthree-bedroom homes are 37% cheaper, while one-bedroom flats are 28% lower than private sector equivalents.
Beyond rent collection, the council also invests in building new homes to address the immense pressure on the current social housing system. With over 7,600 households waiting and more than 300 people in temporary accommodation, it’s a crucial step towards ending homelessness and providing secure homes for everyone.
What’s also noteworthy is the councilās team dedicated to helping tenants manage these changes. They offer support on budgeting, benefits, and securing financial aid. And while some council members, like Cllr Dr Ian Johnson, express concerns about the fairness of the rent hike, many agree it’s a necessary step to ensure a sustainable housing future.
Looking ahead, starting in April 2026, you’ll notice these changes with the first week of rent marked as non-chargeable. Two months prior, tenants will receive detailed notices about the increased charges.
The council remains committed to keeping rent fair and equitable while tackling the ever-growing demand for quality housing. How do you feel about the upcoming rent adjustments? Let us know your thoughts below! š£
