Critics Slam Alleged Attempt to Sully Robert Jenrick’s Image with Transparency Rule

A heated debate erupted in the House of Lords recently over a proposed transparency rule linked to Robert Jenrick, the Shadow Justice Secretary. Conservative peer Lord Fuller slammed the amendment, labelling it a “baseless smear” against Jenrick. The amendment, proposed by Liberal Democrat Baroness Pinnock, aims to introduce a register tracking planning decisions made by the Housing Secretary where donations have been received from the applicants.

Lady Pinnock argues the rule is essential for transparency in planning decisions, emphasising the importance of integrity in the process. She highlights past instances where political figures, including Jenrick, have been criticised for their involvement with developers. Back in 2020, Jenrick faced scrutiny after approving a £1 billion development deemed unlawful by the Government’s planning inspector.

Supporters of the amendment, like Baroness Bennett, believe it’s a step towards restoring trust in politics. She notes it could be dubbed the “Jenrick amendment” to signify its intent to prevent conflicts of interest.

On the other side, Tory peer Lord Fuller dismissed the amendment as “nonsense,” arguing there is adequate oversight from the Electoral Commission regarding political donations. He staunchly defended the integrity of planning processes, criticising the amendment as a political stunt.

Labour’s Lord Wilson of Sedgefield sided with those opposing the change, suggesting there’s already enough transparency in planning case work and that the amendment would burden local planning authorities unnecessarily.
