Deadline for Winter Fuel Payment Confirmed by DWP Following Unexpected Reversal from UK Government

The UK Government has done a policy U-turn, and now nine million pensioners in England and Wales are set to receive the Winter Fuel Payment this year. Previously means-tested, the support is back with a new twist! If you’re a pensioner earning less than £35,000 annually, you’ll automatically receive £200 or £300 to help with your winter fuel bills. For those earning over £35,000, the payment will be recovered through PAYE or self-assessment.

If you’re a higher earner and don’t wish to receive this payment, you have until 15 September to opt out. Remember, eligibility is calculated per person, so if one partner earns less than £35,000, that person will still receive their share of the payment.

The payment eligibility hinges on your income, age, and a few other conditions. If you’re above State Pension age and receiving certain benefits during the qualifying week (15-21 September), expect your payment automatically. Miss out on these benefits? You’ll need to apply through post or phone. Postal claims open from 15 September, and phone applications from 15 October. If you’re over 80, good news—your household may be eligible for £300!

Note: Hospitalisation, certain benefits, or prolonged stays in care homes might affect your eligibility. And in Scotland, a different scheme is in place now.
