Exciting news for adventure-seekers and history buffs! Plans are underway to reopen the iconic Rhondda Tunnel in Wales, closed since 1968. This ambitious project aims to transform the nearly two-mile-long tunnel into a picturesque walking and cycling path, connecting the Rhondda and Upper Afan Valley.
The first step? A planning application set to go before the Rhondda Cynon Taf Council on January 15th, focusing on excavating around the Blaencwm portal. The Rhondda Tunnel Society envisions a vibrant tourist destination, drawing visitors of all ages and abilities to what will be the longest walking and cycling tunnel in Europe!
Once the initial groundwork is completed, this will pave the way for detailed exploration and any necessary repair work to the tunnel, ensuring it’s safe and sound for future foot and bike traffic. The project aims to remove about 8,000 cubic metres of spoil, with nature-friendly plans to regenerate the area where the soil is deposited – think new trees and grass-seeding, boosting local biodiversity!
