The case paints a grim picture of lost innocence and decades of emotional pain. The court heard how Withnell groomed his victim and retained 132 nude images of her for decades, leaving an undeniable paper trail.

During sentencing, Judge Eugene Egan condemned Withnell’s actions, underscoring the “unspeakable hardship” he caused. With his conviction, Withnell also faces an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and will be registered as a sex offender for life. He was also barred from working with children and young adults in the future.

Hywel Davies, defending, attempted to mitigate by pointing to Withnell’s previous good character and health issues due to his age. However, this failed to sway the court’s decision as the gravity of his crimes was laid bare.

Detective Inspector Christine Beaton praised the victim for her resilience and bravery, emphasising the critical role her testimony played in securing justice. She also encouraged other victims of sexual abuse to come forward, offering support and reassurance that their cases will be taken seriously.

This case serves as a stark reminder that justice can prevail, no matter how long it takes. Our thoughts are with the survivors, and we wish them strength as they continue to heal and rebuild their lives.
