🚨 Beware of home improvement scams! 🚨

Alan Pearson, a 65-year-old conman, took advantage of homeowners by falsely promising government grants for external wall installations. Over six months in 2018, Pearson swindled over £30,000 from his victims, leaving their homes in absolute shambles.

He pressured homeowners into quick decisions, claiming grant availability was limited. One victim was even convinced to treat him to dinner as a thank you for supposedly securing an extra grant! 😡

However, instead of legitimate contractors, subpar work was done, leaving four homes damaged and residents out of pocket—one of them losing £18,759. Valerie Bowers, one of the victims, shared how the scam led to a series of strokes, leaving her feeling betrayed.
Pearson, previously convicted of fraud, pleaded not guilty but was found guilty at Merthyr Crown Court. Despite his health issues, including cancer and lung problems, the judge didn’t hold back, calling him a “liar and conman”. His sentence includes a suspended two-year custodial term, a £2,000 fine, and additional costs.
Newport Council’s investigation, alongside Wales Trading Standards, was pivotal in uncovering and prosecuting this fraud. Councillor Mark Spencer praised the dedication of officers in bringing this despicable crime to light. It’s a stern reminder to watch out for rogue traders exploiting the vulnerable. 🛑
