Lloyds Bank reports a staggering 52% increase in romance scams among over 55s. Victims are often fed false stories about their love interests being military personnel or oil rig workers, making meetings and calls an impossibility. These fraudsters then spin tales—urgent medical needs, travel expenses, or unexpected legal troubles—to justify asking for money.

Scammers know no age limit. The highest victims are 55 to 64-year-olds, but cases are increasing among younger age groups too. On average, victims lose over £5,000, and those 75 to 84 lose the most, averaging over £8,000.

Fraud prevention experts warn to be on the lookout for several red flags. If someone online declares love too quickly or has endless excuses not to meet or call, your alarm bells should be ringing. Never send money to someone you’ve not met in person and always talk with friends or family if you’re unsure.

Lloyds Bank works tirelessly to protect its customers, but being informed and cautious is key. Share this to spread awareness and help protect your loved ones from becoming victims of these cruel schemes. Stay safe and savvy! ❤️
