Former Detective Sergeant Joanne Marston from Gwent Police has resigned following a shocking off-duty incident. Convicted of assaulting a man in Devon, Marston’s actions have sparked outrage, leading to her resignation just before a misconduct panel could officially dismiss her without notice.

This alarming incident took place in February 2024, with Marston facing trial at Exeter Magistrates Court. The court fined her £1,000, ordered her to pay £100 in compensation, and covered court costs. Despite stepping down from her post, she was not present at the misconduct hearing held in Cwmbran.

The misconduct panel ruled that had she not resigned, dismissal would have been certain. Marston’s name will now be added to the College of Policing’s barred list. Assistant Chief Constable Vicki Townsend, who chaired the hearing, condemned the behaviour as unacceptable, stating, “There is no place in Gwent Police for those who act in this fashion.”
Townsend emphasised that while most officers uphold their duties with excellence, actions like Marston’s severely undermine public trust. Gwent Police is committed to maintaining high standards and ensuring the public has confidence in their law enforcement officials.
The incident serves as a stark reminder that police officers are expected to adhere to the highest standards both on and off duty. This conviction and resignation highlight the consequences of failing to meet those expectations. What are your thoughts on this shocking turn of events? Share your comments below!
