## Newport Welcomes State-of-the-Art Home Bargains Mega-Store Featuring Garden Centre and Bakery
Newport is set to welcome a major addition to its retail landscape as Home Bargains prepares to unveil a vast new superstore, complete with its own garden centre, bakery and café. The 26,318 square foot outlet opens its doors to the public this weekend, promising customers in south Wales a broader shopping experience than ever before.
The new store, located on Docks Way in the Maesglas area at Mendalgief Retail Park, represents a significant investment by the popular discount retailer, with development costs exceeding £6 million. Construction on the site began earlier this year following the demolition of a former Lidl supermarket and a smaller Home Bargains branch in May 2024. The location already stands out due to its considerable size and fresh, modern design.
A walk through the superstore prior to its official launch reveals fully stocked shelves brimming with a diverse range of products. Shoppers can expect an impressive selection, from homewares and beauty products to pet supplies and toys. Notably, the in-store ‘Garden World’ presents an extensive array of seasonal plants, ornaments, furniture and all manner of garden essentials, aimed at both seasoned horticulturists and novice gardeners.
Adding to the appeal, Home Bargains has integrated a bakery and an on-site café within the Newport branch. The café offers ample seating, providing a comfortable spot for a mid-shop break. Visitors can look forward to a variety of affordable hot and cold food options, including toasties, paninis, wraps, and hot dogs, alongside a selection of teas, coffees and soft drinks. The bakery, meanwhile, ensures freshly made items are available for shoppers throughout the day, enhancing the overall convenience of the shopping trip.
In addition to the expansive retail floor and leisure offerings, the store has created 90 new jobs for the local community, spanning a range of roles in customer service, the café, the bakery and store team leadership. Current vacancies include both full-time team leaders, with a listed salary of just under £31,000 per year, and part-time positions starting at £12.21 per hour for food staff. Home Bargains’ investment in local employment has been welcomed by many, given the current employment climate.
Parking is unlikely to pose an issue for customers, as the new branch boasts a 175-space car park, featuring bays for families and disabled visitors, as well as cycle shelter facilities. The store’s location is conveniently situated opposite other popular outlets including TK Maxx and Pets at Home, further cementing the area’s reputation as one of Newport’s busiest retail hubs.
Home Bargains’ Newport superstore is part of a broader roll-out of large-format outlets in Wales – this site marks the sixth in the nation to include both a garden centre and café. Sister stores at Crosshands, Brynmawr, Cardiff Bay, Denbigh and Prestatyn have already set a high bar for the retailer in the region.
Shoppers can expect the new outlet to open from 8am until 8pm Monday to Saturday, and from 10.30am to 4.30pm on Sundays. The timing of the launch, coinciding with the summer months, is likely to boost interest in the garden centre’s seasonal displays and offerings.
This new investment signals Home Bargains’ continued confidence in Newport as an important retail destination and is set to provide a welcome boost to local amenities and employment opportunities. As residents gear up to explore the new superstore, the company’s expansion strategy in Wales continues to gather momentum, reflecting growing consumer demand for all-in-one shopping experiences at budget-friendly prices.
