🚨 Heads up, folks in Wales! A nest of Asian hornets has been discovered near Wrexham. This marks the first-ever confirmed sighting of these invasive insects in Wales. The yellow-legged hornet, aka Vespa velutina, comes from Asia, and it’s been spreading right across Europe since it first popped up in France in 2004. Now it’s our turn to tackle this unwelcome visitor.

These hornets pose a real threat to our honeybees and pollinators, munching on them in large numbers. So, the Welsh Government is calling on all of us to stay sharp and report any potential sightings. Remember, the Asian hornet was first spotted in England back in 2016, and since then, teams have been on the case to find and destroy any nests annually.

Acting swiftly, the Welsh government has enlisted the National Bee Unit (NBU) to handle the situation. Their deputy first minister believes that with the NBU’s years of expertise, they’ll be crucial in combating these hornets in Wales.

If you’re out and about and spot what you think might be a yellow-legged hornet, do let the authorities know. There’s an “Asian Hornet Watch” mobile app for just that! Or, if you prefer, report online with a snap and location details.
Though these hornets aren’t usually aggressive, a poke at their nest can change that tune quickly. So, steer clear of those nests and remember, official medical advice about hornet stings is available on the NHS website. Stay safe and vigilant, Wales! 🌼🐝
