Exciting changes are coming to Personal Independence Payment (PIP) awards! Starting April 2026, the duration of PIP awards for new claimants will be extended to help tackle the assessment backlog. The review period, currently as short as nine months, will now be a minimum of three years for those aged 25 and over, with the potential to increase to five years if they continue to qualify.

This initiative aims to allow health professionals more time for face-to-face assessments and complete more Work Capability Assessments. The UK Government is committed to reforming the welfare system, increasing the number of in-person assessments, and reducing the backlog of pending assessments. This change supports fairer evaluations, aligns with upcoming Universal Credit changes, and is projected to save £1.9 billion by 2030/31.

These operational modifications are independent of the upcoming Timms Review, which will scrutinise PIP’s role and its assessment criteria. The goal is to better support disabled people in achieving improved health and independence. The changes also include plans to boost employment support initiatives for sick or disabled individuals, including Connect to Work.
Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden emphasises the commitment to reforming the welfare system, enhancing support for those who need it, while assisting individuals into work and ensuring fairness for taxpayers. Get ready for a more efficient and supportive welfare system!
