Football fans were left reaching for tissues at Wembley as a heartwarming moment took centre stage during the England v Wales match. For the first time, players were accompanied by adult mascots, all bravely living with dementia, as they stepped onto the pitch. This moving gesture, a collaboration between the FAW, the English FA, and Alzheimer’s Society, aimed to spotlight the impact of this condition.

The atmosphere was electric as the 22 mascots stood proudly during the national anthems, sending a powerful message of support and unity. Social media buzzed with praise for the Welsh players who tenderly interacted with their adult companions, singing together and standing strong as one. Meanwhile, the English players took a more traditional approach, linking arms with the inspiring mascots standing front and centre.

One fan aptly captured the sentiment online, stating, “Watching the anthems with these incredible individuals battling Alzheimer’s was tear-jerking.”
In a symbolic nod to those facing memory loss, both teams also opted to play the second half without names on their jerseys. This small yet meaningful act highlighted the daily struggles of dementia sufferers and their families.
Among the mascots was Chris Griffiths, a lifelong Cardiff City supporter, and his brother Lyndon. Chris, who is part of Cardiff City Foundation’s 1927 Club, proudly shared how meaningful this experience is: “Walking out at Wembley is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I’ve always loved the game, and this is yet another special memory.”
Lyndon added, “This campaign truly brings dementia to the forefront of public awareness, delivering a vital message.”
FAW Chief Executive, Noel Mooney, expressed the power of football in bringing people together, saying, “Walking out with fans living with dementia shows that nobody should face this condition alone. Football unites us all.”
As the matches continue, let’s remind ourselves of the incredible team effort required to support those affected by dementia. Together, we can make a change and offer hope for the future.
