A former oil industry exec, Robert Hughes, has been sentenced to eight years in prison after being unmasked as a paedophile. This 74-year-old, who once wore a “cloak of respectability” as a senior manager, was convicted of abusing four young girls over 20 years ago. His victims, all under 13, including a girl as young as five, suffered horrific abuse.

Swansea Crown Court heard heartbreaking accounts from the survivors, now in their 20s and 30s. They expressed how the abuse cast long shadows over their lives, from enduring guilt to battling mental health challenges like anxiety and depression. One brave survivor shared that she spent years seeing men as predators, while another endured the painful task of revealing her trauma to loved ones.
Despite the gravity of his crimes, Hughes denied all allegations, forcing his victims to relive their anguish during the trial. Judge Paul Thomas KC underscored the defendant’s arrogance and lack of remorse, lamenting that Hughes couldn’t even admit to his heinous actions. He noted that the punishment, though maximised within the legal framework of the time, would hopefully offer some solace to those deeply affected.

This painful verdict serves as a stark reminder of the importance of supporting survivors and bringing offenders to justice. If you’ve been affected by similar issues, numerous charities and organisations are ready to help. Reach out for the support you deserve. Remember, you are not alone.
