Struggling to get a good night’s sleep? If you’re over 45, BBC Morning Live’s Dr Xand van Tulleken has some advice just for you. Recently, he discussed the impact of menopause on sleep and highlighted the importance of talking to your GP about it. Menopause can cause a range of symptoms, such as sleep disruptions, hot flushes, and mood swings, which sometimes get overlooked.

Dr Xand suggests considering Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) as it can help alleviate these symptoms. While some may hesitate due to exaggerated risks, many find relief with HRT, even if it’s only temporary.

Another topic was fibromyalgia, a chronic condition causing widespread pain and sleep difficulties. If these issues sound familiar, it’s worthwhile asking your GP for a referral to a sleep clinic. While waiting, try maintaining a regular bedtime, keep your room cool, and limit caffeine and alcohol to ease into sleep.

Don’t forget the power of exercise! Aim for 150 minutes of aerobic activity weekly, like brisk walking or gardening, to boost your sleep quality.
For those whose tiredness isn’t linked to menopause, consider ruling out other conditions with your GP, such as iron deficiency anaemia or thyroid problems.
