🚨 **Pool Closures Put Youngsters at Risk!** 🚨

Over 500 swimming pools across the UK have shut down since 2010, with a staggering 250 closures in the last five years! This trend isn’t just inconvenient; it’s leaving our young ones high and dry — literally!

A recent report highlights a concerning rise in children unable to swim 25 metres confidently. In Year 7, around 30% of kids struggle with basic swimming skills. 😲 Back in 2017/2018, this figure was slightly lower at 27%. This growing lack of confidence poses a real danger, raising the risk of drowning and stripping away the joy and health perks of swimming.

The GMB union, along with a coalition of local government and leisure organisations, are sounding the alarm. They urge that urgent funding is needed to save and refurbish these essential community facilities. Without investment, we’re not only losing places to swim but also the invaluable physical and mental health benefits they provide. 🏊♂️🧠
Kevin Brandstatter from GMB has slammed the “grim legacy of austerity,” which he believes forced the pool closures, and is calling for the government to step in. “Swimming is a basic life skill and childhood joy. It’s terrifying to think so many youngsters are deprived of this,” he says.
The coalition warns that 60% of public swimming pools that remain are past their prime or need serious refurbishing. As Liz Green from the Local Government Association points out, local communities lean heavily on these spaces for much more than just swimming. Let’s not forget: fitness facilities are crucial for both mind and body!
The government has pledged £400 million to support grassroots facilities and promises to ensure that this funding helps boost people’s health and community connections. Let’s hope this is the splash of support our communities need!
