Tragedy struck on the Isle of Wight as three people lost their lives in a helicopter crash during a flying lesson. One individual remains in hospital, fighting for survival. The incident occurred Monday morning near Shanklin Road when a Robinson R44 II helicopter, operated by Northumbria Helicopters, spiralled out of control and crashed into a hedge. Eyewitness Leigh Goldsmith recalled witnessing the helicopter’s terrifying descent.
The aircraft, carrying four people including the pilot, had just departed from Sandown Airport around 9 AM. Emergency services, including local fire crews and an Air Ambulance, swiftly responded. An Air Accident Investigation Branch team is now delving into the cause of this devastating accident.
In a separate incident earlier, passengers from a commercial flight were asked to disembark due to weight restrictions, underscoring the challenges posed by the recent extreme hot weather.
