⚠️ Drug Crisis in Prisons Hits ‘Endemic Levels’ ⚠️

A shocking report reveals a deadly synthetic opioid crisis at Parc Prison in Bridgend. This alarming situation is part of a wider drug epidemic sweeping through prisons in Wales and England, driven by a ‘culture of acceptance’ towards drug use. 😢

The report, from the House of Commons justice committee, highlights the rampant availability of illicit drugs in prisons, making it nearly impossible for inmates to escape the problem. An eye-opening statistic: 39% of prisoners say it’s easy to get drugs inside. This widespread issue not only endangers lives but also undermines prison safety and rehabilitation efforts.

From December 2022 to December 2024, 136 of 833 investigated deaths were drug-related. Synthetic opioids, like nitazenes, are shockingly potent—far stronger than heroin—and have already been linked to fatal overdoses at HMP Parc.
The prison environment, rife with drugs, fuels violence, debt, and worsens mental health. Inmates are pressured into using untested substances, acting as ‘guinea pigs’ for these dangerous drugs, often while locked up for 22 hours a day with little else to do. This environment breeds vulnerability and addiction.
The numbers are staggering: in 12 months, up to March 2025, there were 26,348 drug finds—a rise of 25% from the previous year. Clearly, urgent steps are needed to curb this evolving threat and protect lives.
In response, HMP Parc has boosted security measures, but the fight against this drug crisis continues. Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic issue. Stay informed and share your thoughts below. 💬
