Starting from Bassaleg, Newport, Mica may have begun as a self-confessed “scaredy cat”, but she’s now taking on the icy tracks of Italy with giant leaps of courage. Imagine hurtling down ice at 80mph – Mica calls it “F1 on ice”! 🏎️🤯
Her journey in athletics began at just 14, egged on by her mum to try a sprint at Newport Harriers. That one session sparked a sprinting career that saw her shine in the 2014 Commonwealth Games for Wales. Fast forward to today, Mica’s ready to fulfil her Cool Runnings dream, honouring her Jamaican roots. 🌿🎽
It hasn’t been a smooth ride. After an impressive debut at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, she faced challenges that prompted her to part ways with the British team. But the call of the ice and family heritage was too strong! After getting her Jamaican citizenship, she’s back—stronger and more determined than ever. 💪🌟
Her beloved grandfather, part of the Windrush generation, inspired her, and Mica’s excitement could light up the skies. She’s not just competing; she’s celebrating her mixed heritage and unity between Wales and Jamaica. 🇬🇧💞🇯🇲
“Representing both my nations is a dream come true. Wales and Jamaica are small but mighty, full of heart and pride. Whether belting out Tom Jones tunes or jamming to Bob Marley, both cultures have shaped the athlete I am,” Mica beams.
As she speeds down those icy slopes in Milan-Cortina, Mica hopes for four smooth runs. She’s taking her dad along for the ride (in spirit!), while the family cheers loudly from Newport. 🥳📣
