Financial aid of £3,500 available for bereaved individuals below a certain age from DWP

Losing a loved one is never easy, and amidst the emotional whirlwind, financial worries shouldn’t add to the burden. If you’ve recently lost a partner, you might be eligible for up to £3,500 in support from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

This Bereavement Support Payment is designed to ease the financial strain, replacing former benefits like the Widowed Parent’s Allowance and Bereavement Allowance. The good news? Your income and savings won’t affect your eligibility.

To qualify, a few conditions must be met. Your partner must have been under the State Pension age (currently 66) at the time of their passing and lived in the UK or a country providing bereavement benefits. Moreover, there’s no need to have been married; cohabiting partners can qualify too.

One of these must apply to your partner:
– Paid sufficient Class 1 or Class 2 National Insurance contributions.
– Passed away due to a work-related accident or illness.

Timing is key! To claim the full amount, apply within three months of their death. If you’re a bit late, you can still claim, but benefits may be reduced.

The payment comes in two rates. If you’re eligible for the higher rate (in cases such as being pregnant or receiving Child Benefit):
– One-off: £3,500
– 18 monthly payments of £350

For the lower rate:
– One-off: £2,500
– 18 monthly payments of £100

Even if you’re slightly out of the initial claim period, partial payments might still be an option. Backdated claims are possible for deaths after 5 April 2019 if certain conditions apply.

Ready to claim? You’ll need your National Insurance number, your partner’s details, and your bank information. Applications can be submitted online, over the phone, or by post.
