Meet the culprits: Galina Nikolova, Stoyan Stoyanov, Tsvetka Todorova, Gyunesh Ali, and Patritsia Paneva. Their slick operation processed a whopping 6,000 fake applications using real and stolen identities, all from a few back offices in Wood Green, north London. When applications got denied, they’d just keep trying until the cash rolled in.

British authorities got wind of their antics thanks to a crucial tip-off from a Bulgarian officer. This led to raids revealing hundreds of forged documents and £750,000 in cash hidden in suitcases and shopping bags. Fancy confiscated items included a black Audi, designer watches from Emporio Armani and Versace, Gucci shoes, and Chanel trainers.

Even after arrests, Stoyanov had the cheek to continue filing fake claims, snatching another £17,000 while under investigation!

Prison sentences added up to 25 years for the group, with Nikolova serving eight years and Stoyanov four. Ali faces seven years and three months, while Todorova has been released on licence due to time served. Authorities are keen to reclaim more of the stolen funds, so the hunt continues.

The Department for Work and Pensions isn’t taking this lightly, with last year’s anti-fraud efforts saving taxpayers an estimated £25 billion.
