🍂🌧️ Hello Autumn! As the season begins, the Met Office has unveiled the new roster of storm names for 2025. Get ready to meet Amy, Bram, and Chandra, the first storms of the season – names chosen by none other than the public!

Why name storms, you ask? Well, it’s all about making sure we know when impactful weather is on its way. Storms are given names when they’re expected to shake things up with “medium” or “high” impacts. So, whether it’s gusty winds, heavy rainfall, or even snow, these names help us prepare and stay safe.

Ever wondered how these names are picked? This year, a staggering 50,000 suggestions flooded in from across the UK, Netherlands, and Ireland. The selection captures popular and personally significant names. For instance, the suggestion for “Dave” came from someone in honour of her husband’s epic snoring, rivalled only by stormy weather!

Feeling nostalgic for past storms? Our last visitor, Storm Floris, breezed through in August leaving a mark with its fierce summer winds of up to 82 mph in Scotland! But don’t worry, last season was quieter compared to the record-breaking 12 named storms of 2023/24.
Although there’s no proof that UK storms are becoming more frequent or ferocious, climate change is stirring things up. Rising sea levels could amplify coastal impacts, while a warmer atmosphere means heavier rainfall when storms hit.
Let’s brace for whatever this autumn has in store. Stay informed and stay safe! 🌬️🍁
