π¨ Urgent Action Needed in Wrexham! π¨

Imagine living next to a landfill for 18 years, with the smell getting worse and no solutions in sight. That’s the reality for Johnstown residents fed up with the noxious odours from the old Hafod quarry landfill. Despite community outcry and a petition of 1,125 signatures, the problem persists, and locals fear it could last another 35 years.π·

Campaigner Steve Gittins passionately spoke at the Senedd, revealing the struggles faced by residents, who endure relentless smells while officials provide vague assurances with little action. He criticised the “smoke and mirrors” tactics allegedly used by regulators to downplay the extent of the issue.

Natural Resources Wales has been accused of governance failures for not enforcing stricter measures. Meanwhile, Wrexham Council found “no statutory nuisance” during a recent assessment. Still, residents challenge the robustness of these conclusions, urging for an independent review.π
Mr. Gittins emphasised that they’ve been reporting the same issues for two decades without seeing any significant improvements. The burden of “complaints fatigue” has silenced many, as people grow tired of reporting problems only to see them ignored.
With over half of the landfill’s waste coming from England, Johnstown’s locals find it unjust to suffer for rubbish that isn’t even theirs. They demand accountability and a sustainable plan to close the site. ποΈβ
Tired of empty promises and restricted community engagement, the residents call for real transparency and action before it’s too late. Letβs stand with them and amplify their voices to bring much-needed change! π
