Have you ever seen anything as astonishing as a 70ft fin whale washed up on a beach? Well, beachgoers at the lovely Cefn Sidan Sands in Carmarthenshire did! This massive sea creature, second in size only to the blue whale, made an unexpected appearance, leaving everyone in awe.

Sadly, the beautiful fin whale was already in a “bad state of decomposition” when discovered. Experts say it was too late to determine exactly what happened, but the sight alone is quite incredible. It turns out that whale strandings are becoming more frequent around the UK, possibly linked to the global whaling ban from 1984, which has allowed some whale populations to recover.

Rob Deaville from the UK Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme explained that while such events are always sad, they might actually signal a silver lining for the species as their numbers could be on the rise. The local council, after some advice, decided to let nature take its course, allowing the whale to decompose naturally on the beach. This could take some time given the fin whale’s enormous size, with its head alone measuring over 16ft!

Did you know? This is only the fifth time a fin whale has stranded on a Welsh beach since records began in 1990. It’s a rare occurrence and certainly not something you see every day. If you’re in the area, it’s a strange but fascinating natural wonder to behold—but remember, the site is being closely monitored to ensure safety.
