Doctors across Wales are sounding the alarm, painting a troubling picture of a healthcare system in disarray. Despite years of dedicated study and countless unpaid hours working for the NHS, many can’t find employment. How did we get here?
🎓 A Broken Promise: Young, talented doctors who poured their hearts into their work now face grim prospects. Many can’t even secure enough hours to pay the bills, driving some to leave the profession or even the country.
🛑 The Bigger Picture: The shortage isn’t limited to doctors. Newly qualified nurses are also struggling to find jobs, despite having been promised opportunities. Hundreds of hours of unpaid work have left them feeling defrauded by the system.
🗣️ Dr Oba Babs-Osibodu, chair of the BMA’s Welsh resident doctor committee, reveals the mental strain: “These doctors aren’t failures—they’ve been failed by a system that promised them jobs.” Adding to the chaos, a survey found 40% of trainee doctors fear unemployment, with some already applying for jobs abroad or considering leaving medicine entirely.
📈 Poor Workforce Planning: Experts are questioning how this mismatch happened. With hospitals overstretched and waiting lists growing, it’s clear more doctors are needed. Yet, poor planning seems to have left countless doctors in limbo.
