A Cardiff woman has been banned from keeping animals after a tragic case involving her cat, Melody. The black and white feline, already known for her cries due to a painful leg injury, sadly passed away from an infection after her owner, Adrianna Caldarer, failed to get her the veterinary care she desperately needed.

Despite assuring RSPCA inspectors and the police that Melody was “fine” and being treated, the reality was heartbreaking. When finally examined by a vet, Melody’s condition was dire. Her leg was swollen, and pus oozed from her old injury. Melody had been left to suffer in pain for weeks, as the court later heard.

A neighbour initially took the lame cat to a veterinary surgery due to concerns about her condition. The examination revealed Melody wasn’t bearing any weight on her right foreleg and was crying out in pain. The vets offered several options, emphasising the urgency of further treatment. Unfortunately, these recommendations were ignored.
When investigators and officers returned to check on Melody, they were met with resistance and misleading information. Melody’s suffering only ended when she was found and taken for emergency care. However, she sadly couldn’t overcome the infection caused by her untreated injury.
Appearing in Cardiff Magistrates’ Court, Caldarer admitted to causing unnecessary suffering to Melody by neglecting to seek vital treatment. As a result, she’s been banned from keeping any animals for three years, ordered to complete 120 hours of community service, attend a 15-day rehabilitation activity, and pay £1,000 in costs.
