**Cardiff’s Iconic Metros Nightclub Building Hits the Auction Block – But the Party Isn’t Over**
A legendary fixture in Cardiff’s nightlife is at the centre of widespread speculation after its home was listed for auction—yet devoted partygoers can breathe a sigh of relief, as the beloved Metros nightclub will continue to operate as usual.
Nestled between St Mary Street and The Hayes, Metros has long been a rite of passage for generations of Cardiff revellers. Tales of unforgettable nights, thumping music, and a unique basement atmosphere are common currency among those who have called the city home over the years. Now, the property itself rather than the club is changing hands, a detail that has been lost amidst a flurry of misleading social media posts.
Misunderstandings spread quickly online, with some believing the famed venue was shutting its doors for good. However, Metros has moved to reassure its loyal following with a clear statement: the business is here to stay. “We are NOT closing down,” Metros wrote in a Facebook update, addressing the confusion. “The building Metros is in is for sale at the moment—this is not the business and just the building! All it means for us is we may be getting a new landlord but not much else.”
The club, which first opened its doors in 1993, has built a reputation as one of Cardiff’s premier destinations for alternative music scenes. Its website boasts of being “Cardiff’s biggest alt club”, and its regulars recall the distinctive descent into the subterranean space, bustling with energy and character.
Despite the property’s appearance on Seel & Co’s auction list, Metros has underlined that its future at the Bakers Row location is secure. According to the auction details, the building—which also houses a small ground-level entrance on the vibrant street—pulls in annual rental income of £34,000. The current lease is signed through February 2035, offering a sense of stability for both the club’s operations and potential investors.
The property—Marketed with a guide price of £225,000-plus—consists predominantly of the basement space, spanning approximately 3,657 square feet, supplemented by a smaller 351 square foot entrance at street level. These dimensions highlight the sizeable area that has played host to countless nights for party lovers in the heart of the city.
In addition to the Metros building, a neighbouring property—currently home to a Tesco Express shop—is being auctioned off with a similar guide price, opening up the possibility for buyers to acquire both sites. Alternatively, the properties may land in separate hands, depending on the outcome of the live online bidding.
Huw Edwards, head of property auctions at Seel & Co, shed light on the process: “The property in Bakers Row has been occupied for decades by the nightclub ‘Metros’. We are informed they are signed on a 10-year lease from February 17, 2025, at an annual rental of £34,000 plus VAT per annum. The lease features an upward-only review after five years and again after ten years to market value.”
The upcoming auction is scheduled to kick off at midday on Monday, 9 June, with bidding closing the following day. Both the Metros building and its neighbouring property will be open to offers, with each expected to draw keen interest from the local investment community.
For regular patrons and nostalgists alike, the reassurance is clear: Metros will keep the music playing and the late nights alive, regardless of who winds up owning the bricks and mortar above. It’s a resounding reminder that, sometimes, a change in landlord is just that—and the spirit of a legendary nightclub runs deeper than any property deed.
