**Shocking Incident at St Cadoc’s Hospital: Patient Detained After Harrowing Attack**

In a chilling event at St Cadoc’s Hospital, Caerleon, Aeron Gingell, 23, shocked the community with a violent attack that left a fellow patient unconscious in a bathroom. The disturbing scene was discovered on January 21, with the victim found in a pool of blood, shoelaces bound tightly around his neck. Initially thought to be a suicide attempt, suspicions soon turned to Gingell.
Gingell, diagnosed with a severe schizoaffective disorder, had been under supervision at the hospital since February 2022 due to prior incidents involving weapons. The court heard that the victim’s face turned blue after the assault, and blood seeped from above his eye. After the attack, Gingell reportedly told staff that voices in his head claimed he killed the victim, incorporating him into a delusional belief that he was being molested.

Expert testimony from Dr. Inti Qurashi, a forensic psychiatrist, highlighted Gingell’s severe mental illness, describing his somatic hallucinations as some of the most intense he’d encountered in his career. Despite the grave nature of the crime, Dr. Qurashi noted significant improvements in Gingell’s condition since receiving treatment at Ashworth Hospital, a high-security psychiatric facility near Liverpool.
During sentencing, Judge Tracy Lloyd-Clarke acknowledged the role Gingell’s mental health played in the attack. Orders were made under the Mental Health Act requiring Gingell to be detained for medical treatment, recognising his need for continued care.

This shocking case sheds light on the critical intersections of mental health and crime, underlining the importance of proper care and supervision in such facilities.
