🚨 Late-Night Kebab Ban in Newport! 🚨

Hey Newport folks! Big news from our local takeaway scene 🍽️. Vegas Kebab, located on Chepstow Road, is facing a one-month late-night sales suspension after a visit from immigration officers led to some serious consequences.
Here’s what happened: Officers discovered an “immigration offender” working there. This led to a hefty £40,000 penalty for employing someone illegally. Yikes! The owner, Iskender Dogru, claimed he was just helping a family friend who was waiting for his appeal to stay in the UK. The friend, an 18-year-old student, insisted he was just there to learn the ropes, not for a paycheque.

During a Newport City Council meeting, the committee had to decide whether additional penalties were necessary. The Home Office argued that employing illegal workers is unfair to businesses playing by the rules. Mr Dogru, who’s been living in the UK for 26 years, expressed that this was an isolated incident.

The committee decided on a one-month suspension of the business’s late-night trading hours, effective after a 21-day appeal period. This means no business past 11pm. Plus, Mr Dogru has to submit a ‘Right to Work’ policy.
Bigger picture? It’s a reminder of how important it is for businesses to verify the status of their workers. This incident brings to light the complexities and challenges many face when trying to help those in difficult situations.
