In an incredible twist of events, a farmworker’s drunken attempt to set a caravan and car ablaze was thwarted—not by quick intervention—but by a faulty lighter! Janis Dambrans, a 53-year-old from Latvia, working in the idyllic Crundale area, found himself at the centre of chaos after a dispute with a fellow worker spiralled out of control.

It all started when Dambrans decided to douse his colleague’s car and caravan steps with petrol, intent on setting them alight. But, in an almost comedic turn, his lighter let him down. You might even say it was a case of “all fuel, no fire.” 🏕️🚗

The judge in Swansea Crown Court summed up Janis’ antics as “foolish,” done in a “drunken stupor.” It’s a classic case of drink and dispute making for a fiery (or not so fiery) situation!

But the story doesn’t stop there. After being caught red-handed—and probably feeling caught red-faced too—Dambrans attempted to carve his frustrations into the caravan wall with a knife. Things heated up further when he threatened to burn down the property of his boss!

Despite tensions flaring, the farm’s owners had initially allowed him to stay on, realising that their Latvian farmhand had enjoyed a tipple too many. But when matters resurfaced with a bang—or rather, a big stick—Dambrans was shown the door.

With a police record now in tow, including some minor past offences, and after spending nearly five months on remand, Dambrans was sentenced to 24 months in prison. He’ll serve half in custody, with the rest on licence. The presiding Judge Huw Rees admitted that Dambrans was a hard worker but couldn’t overlook the alcohol-fueled drama.

Moral of the story? When life hands you a lighter, make sure it works. 🔥
