Tragic news has struck as former England rugby player Tom Voyce has passed away at the age of 43. An inquest revealed that Voyce was nearly three times over the drink-drive limit when he attempted to navigate his 4×4 across a swollen ford during Storm Darragh. Sadly, he lost his life while trying to cross the River Aln in Northumberland, with his body discovered days later.

Tom had been enjoying a day at a farm shoot followed by an evening at the Queen’s Head pub in Glanton with friends and family. Despite the boisterous weather turning roads into streams, he attempted to make the 8-mile journey back home to Alnwick. However, nature proved too fierce a foe that night.
His widow, Anna, and family were devastated at his disappearance but later discovered his vehicle in the ford, leading to the tragic realisation. The coroner ruled his death as an accidental drowning, connected to a blood alcohol level significantly above the legal driving limit. It was a heavy blow to all who knew him, especially considering his stature and achievements in the rugby community.

Former teammates, including World Cup heroes Matt Dawson and Lawrence Dallaglio, shared heartfelt tributes for the man who was not just a formidable presence on the pitch but a cherished friend off it. After a distinguished career with Bath, Wasps, and Gloucester, where he earned nine England caps, Tom retired from professional rugby in 2013 and embarked on new ventures in Northumberland.

The Queen’s Head publican recalled Tom as engaging and in high spirits that evening. However, the inquest brought to light his impaired judgement due to alcohol, compounded by the ferocity of Storm Darragh, which had made local roads treacherous.
Mrs Voyce has suggested that future safety measures, such as barriers at dangerous fords, might prevent such tragedies, and her proposal will be considered by local authorities. Our thoughts go out to Tom’s family, including his young son, and all who were touched by his life. Rest in peace, Tom. 🌧️💔
