The trouble kicked off around 8 AM this morning, and it seems to be linked to an issue with Amazon Web Services (AWS), the backbone for much of the modern internet. AWS has reported “increased error rates” and delays across multiple services. In simple terms, this means apps and websites that rely on AWS are struggling to stay online.
Another spot of bad news for UK users: several major banks, including Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland, are experiencing outages. Many users are having trouble logging into their online and mobile banking apps, and even some card payments are getting declined.
Amazon says their engineers are on the case, working hard to fix the issue. In fact, they’ve identified a potential root cause related to DNS resolution—essentially, the process that connects us to online services. They’re exploring multiple solutions to speed up recovery.
