Tragic Loss of BBC Presenter Lynda Shahwan
We are saddened to share the untimely passing of BBC Radio Wales presenter, Lynda Shahwan. The beloved broadcaster, known for her outstanding professionalism and warm personality, tragically died following a car accident while on a family holiday in Vancouver.
On July 15, Lynda, 53, was involved in a crash in north Vancouver, which caused her vehicle to overturn. Despite sustaining injuries, she was discharged from Lions Gate Hospital the next day but wasn’t well enough to fly back to the UK. Heartbreakingly, just a few days later, she was found unresponsive at her accommodation. A coroner has ruled her death as “unnatural,” citing a motor vehicle incident leading to peritonitis as the cause. An inquest is ongoing.
Born in Caerphilly, Lynda’s influence spread far beyond her Cardiff roots. Her contributions to BBC Radio Wales over 25 years left a lasting impression on colleagues and listeners alike. Many of us will remember her as the creative mind behind one of Wales’ cherished podcasts, which brought the charm of allotment life to countless homes. Her colleague, Carolyn Hitt, expressed shock and sorrow, describing Lynda as a “very special person” and extending heartfelt sympathies to her husband Sharif and their two sons.
Lynda’s unexpected departure leaves a void in the hearts of many, but her legacy continues to inspire. Our sincere condolences to her family and friends during this difficult time. May she rest in peace.
