Celebrity Traitors star and former England rugby player Joe Marler shares his no-nonsense method for spotting liars—eye contact! Known for his straightforward approach, Marler reveals his technique before filming the hit BBC show.

Fans of the show know Marler isn’t afraid to call out the deceitful, a skill he honed long before setting foot in the castle where the series is filmed. He recently reflected on a pivotal conversation with England coach Steve Borthwick in 2023. Eager to make the Rugby World Cup squad after 18 months on the sidelines, Marler looked Borthwick right in the eye and asked if there was a real chance he’d be selected. The response? A tellingly long blink before Borthwick assured him that hard work could earn him a spot.
By August, Marler’s efforts paid off as he made the squad, helping England reach the semi-finals. Reflecting back, Marler recently opened up on the Great Company podcast about the wild ride on Celebrity Traitors, calling the experience both daunting and entertaining.

“It was bonkers and one of the best experiences of my life,” shared Marler. “Being mistaken for the sound guy was just one of the many laughs!” Despite stepping away from international rugby in late 2024, Marler’s journey from rugby pitch to reality TV has been anything but ordinary. 🌟🏉
