Television presenter Joel Dommett, who will helm this year’s National Television Awards (NTAs) for his fifth consecutive time, has thrown his support behind the Netflix drama “Adolescence” as the coveted awards’ longlist is revealed to the public. The much-talked-about series has piqued national interest by boldly delving into contemporary issues such as the so-called “incel” (involuntary celibate) subculture and the continuing debate regarding online safety for young people.

“Adolescence,” a four-part drama, centres on the emotional turmoil of a family when 13-year-old Jamie—portrayed by rising star Owen Cooper—is suddenly arrested by armed police, a moment witnessed by his father, Eddie Miller (played by celebrated actor Stephen Graham). In addition to being nominated in the new drama category, both Graham and Cooper are longlisted in the drama performance section. Actor Erin Doherty, who lends her talents as a child psychologist within the series, also receives a nod in the same category.

Speaking to the PA news agency, Dommett described “Adolescence” as a “game-changer,” placing it in the same transformative league as standout productions such as “Baby Reindeer” and “Mr Bates Vs The Post Office.” The presenter admitted initially feeling anxious about tuning in, partly due to being a parent himself. However, he underscored the programme’s importance and powerful execution, describing it as “unbelievably moving” and technically impressive.

Dommett further praised the ensemble cast and the immersive storytelling, stating, “Every so often, a show emerges that propels television forward. ‘Adolescence’ is one such example—compelling to watch, brilliantly written, and performed to perfection.” He concluded by wishing the series well on awards night, asserting, “They truly deserve the recognition.”

The societal impact of “Adolescence” has extended beyond television. In March, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer convened a meeting with the show’s creators, various charities, and young people to explore the festival of issues raised by the programme—particularly those relating to adolescent safety and internet culture. The show is notable technically for its commitment to authenticity and tension; each episode was filmed in a single continuous take after months of thorough preparation, a creative decision that has drawn acclaim from critics and audiences alike.

Owen Cooper’s standout performance as Jamie has not gone unnoticed by Dommett, who remarked, “For what is essentially his first acting role, he delivers an astonishing performance. I genuinely hope this is just the beginning for him.” Reflecting on the dramatic core of the series, Dommett noted the unique situation where Cooper’s character competes in the same category as his on-screen father, played by Graham.

Elsewhere on the NTAs longlist, Disney+ drama “Rivals,” adapted from Dame Jilly Cooper’s popular novel, is in the running for the new drama award, with notable performances from Danny Dyer and David Tennant also receiving recognition. The awards will also see television stalwart Gary Lineker, currently in the headlines following his early departure from BBC’s football coverage and an apology over a controversial social media post, included among the nominees for TV presenter of the year. He will compete with last year’s champions Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, who have impressively clinched the presenter award for a record 23rd consecutive time.

This year’s NTAs hold added significance, as the ceremony celebrates its 30th anniversary. Dommett shared his excitement, saying, “There’s a fantastic energy in the air; every year we aim to elevate the spectacle, but this milestone will bring something particularly special for viewers.” He hinted at attempts to refresh the format, promising an experience bigger and better than before.

The shortlist for the NTAs will be announced in August, shortly before the final round of voting opens. Victors will be crowned during the star-studded show broadcast live on ITV1 and ITVX on 10 September 2025, promising an evening full of drama, celebration, and, for some, perhaps a well-deserved crowning moment.
