Graham Linehan, famed for creating Father Ted, is making headlines again. This time, he’s in the dock at Westminster Magistrates’ Court. The 57-year-old Irish comedy writer finds himself on trial, accused of harassing trans activist Sophia Brooks.

The drama unfolded outside the Battle of Ideas conference in Westminster last October. Reports say that Brooks, filming the encounter, questioned Linehan about his controversial comments regarding teenagers. Things got heated, with harsh words exchanged. A video shown in court captured a moment where Linehan seized Brooks’ phone, an act he claims was a “reflex response” to taunts about his personal life.

In court, Linehan spoke out, upset over alleged harassment from Brooks, whom he claims invaded his personal space with a phone camera. Feeling provoked, he admitted to grabbing and tossing the phone aside to halt the taunting. Linehan insisted he didn’t intend harm and is attempting to defend his actions as a journalist bringing attention to what he calls “vindictive” tactics.
Prosecutors argue Linehan’s social media activity was relentless and abusive towards Brooks, painting a picture of deep contempt. Despite this, Linehan denies charges of harassment and criminal damage. His lawyer made a case to dismiss the charges, but the judge wasn’t convinced. The trial’s spotlight remains focused on the encounter, as the court continues to deliberate the evidence and accusations. Stay tuned for more updates!
