🚨 Big News for Merthyr Tydfil! 🚮

Merthyr Tydfil Council is racing against the clock to hit a 70% recycling target this year, or they risk facing nearly £300,000 in fines from the Welsh Government! Currently, the recycling rate stands at 64.3%, which falls short of the mark. But there’s a silver lining: achieving the goal could save the council over £800,000 annually by avoiding fines and reducing black bin waste.

Did you know? A massive 52% of what’s in Merthyr’s wheelie bins could be recycled, including 30% food waste! By simply placing recyclables in the correct bin, an extra £565,000 could be saved each year. That’s a win-win for the environment and the community’s wallet. 🌍💷
The council’s strategy outlines five major aims to tackle waste effectively over the next few years:
1. **Stop Waste Before it Starts:** Encouraging smart shopping, proper meal planning, and reusable alternatives.
2. **Boost Reuse & Repair:** Launching new services to revive and reuse items within the community.
3. **Ramp Up Recycling:** The goal is to exceed a 70% rate by integrating flexible plastics into collections and exploring options for disposable items.
4. **Green Waste Services:** Aiming to trial ultra-low-emission vehicles and optimise collection routes for efficiency.
5. **Strengthen Infrastructure:** Upgrading waste sites and recycling centres to be future-ready.
With your support in recycling efforts, Merthyr Tydfil can dodge fines, save money, and contribute positively to the environment. So, let’s all chip in and make a difference!
