Big news: Councils across England might just be following Epping’s lead and challenging the use of local hotels for housing asylum seekers. Epping Forest District Council recently won a High Court battle, halting the use of the Bell Hotel for this purpose. Now, Broxbourne Council in Hertfordshire is urgently seeking legal advice to launch similar action.
Nigel Farage from Reform UK hinted that councils where his party has sway could take similar steps after Epping’s victory. Meanwhile, in South Norfolk, they’re opting for planning rules over litigation, focusing on housing families instead of single adults.
The controversy isn’t without some heated debates and protests, especially after incidents around certain hotels. The Government emphasises working with communities to ease tensions, while also aiming to close all asylum hotels by the end of this Parliament.
