Heartbreaking news has emerged about James Poots, a young man whose vibrant life was cut short due to tragic hospital oversights. At just 24, James, an active and spirited dryliner, was diagnosed with pericarditis in 2023. Despite his pleas and a concerning medical diagnosis, critical delays in his treatment cast a dark shadow over his future.
Rochdale Coroners Court recently revealed shocking details about the failure in his care. An urgent MRI was recommended in November 2023 but wasn’t performed until May the following year. Despite his evident suffering, James’ case was repeatedly overlooked—a heart scan showed worrying signs needing immediate follow-through, yet bureaucracy continually placed him on the backburner. His surgery finally took place in March 2025, after which he tragically passed away only a week later.
Emma Walsh, James’ sister, recalls with profound sadness, “His spark had gone.” Despite his pain, James thought of others, even considering volunteering at the hospital to give back to the community. Emma voiced her family’s frustration at the inquest, emphasizing that James was consistently failed by the medical system that promised to protect him. “He was bright, intelligent and brought light into every room,” she remembered.
Area Coroner Catherine McKenna concluded that while the failings in the hospital’s MDT process hindered James’ treatment, she attributed his passing to natural causes, recognising certain procedural enhancements since his ordeal. Nevertheless, James’ family was left stunned by the verdict, believing his condition could have been managed better with timely intervention.
Dr Rafik Bedair, Chief Medical Officer, expressed deep condolences and acknowledged the inadequacies in James’ care. The trust is now committed to reducing wait times and ensuring that urgent cases receive the attention needed.
