π¨ Heads Up, Shoppers! π¨ The UK’s major supermarkets are sounding the alarm on food costs π·π¨ Bosses from Tesco, Asda, M&S, Sainsbury’s, Lidl, Aldi, Iceland, Morrisons, and Waitrose are urging the government to reconsider a hefty business rates surtax. They’re warning that new taxes might push up food prices even more ππ If the Chancellor doesn’t exempt large retailers from this surtax, it could mean bigger food bills for us all! Supermarket chiefs say they’re already feeling the squeeze with over Β£7 billion in extra costs this year alone.

The proposed surtax is part of a plan to provide discounts for smaller high-street shops but might leave the giants footing a massive bill. Large retail spaces, despite being few, pay a third of the entire retail sector’s business rates. Any further increase could mean bad news for our grocery budgets π€―π Next monthβs autumn Budget statement will reveal all β fingers crossed for some relief! π€

Helen Dickinson from the British Retail Consortium is saying supermarkets are doing their best to keep food affordable, but it’s a real struggle. From national insurance hikes to new packaging taxes, the financial pressure is enormous. π¬ Let’s hope the government rethinks its approach and helps keep those food prices in check. What do you think could be done to ease the pressure? π€π¬ Let us know your thoughts! πππ₯ #FoodPrices #Supermarkets #BudgetTalks
