Man Allegedly Uses Religious Text as Weapon in Violent Attack on Wife, Inflicting Burns

Shocking news from Newport as 23-year-old Sameer Ali is sentenced for a series of horrifying domestic abuse incidents against his wife. Over their three-year marriage, things took a dark turn, especially in the last six months when Ali’s substance use spiraled. His unpredictable and aggressive behaviour included physical assaults and financial manipulation, such as taking out a credit card in his wife’s name without her consent.

In two separate events in March, Ali first attacked his wife with a burning hot pan, leaving her injured, and then later dragged her out of bed, taking her to his grandparents’ house where he accused her of infidelity. This vicious attack included hitting her with a holy book and ripping it apart. Adding to the torment, he verbally abused her while calling her father and denied all accusations when arrested, dismissing them as attempts to “remove him” from the family.

Despite his violent history—Ali pleaded guilty to actual bodily harm, assault, criminal damage, and fraud—the court sentenced him to 26 weeks of suspended imprisonment. A 30-day rehabilitation activity, 120 days of alcohol abstinence monitoring, and a two-year restraining order were also imposed.
